WELCA

Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA)

Purpose – As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. Women of ELCA members continue their work of ministry through Bible study, prayer, and special projects that help others.

Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at the Church 9 – 11 a.m. except May, July and August. All women of First Lutheran Church are invited to participate in any or all WELCA activities. We welcome new members.

Bible study – We use lessons from the WELCA “Gather” magazine. During Lent starting Wednesday, March 8 at 9 a.m. for 5 weeks we will be using Lenten devotions.

Activities – We coordinate activities and use proceeds from the Spring and Fall rummage sales and bake sales, gift table, etc. to support Meals-on-Wheels, Samaritan Fellowship, Project SHARE, and Habitat for Humanity, Domestic Violence (Cumberland and Perry counties) and Carlisle C.A.R.E.S. Resource Center.

In February we make fudge for sale around Valentine’s Day and call it “The Benevolence Fudge Project.” Proceeds from the sale go to supplement the cost of groceries for four meals at My Brother’s Table and to the United Way for their “heat allotment fund.”

Mother/Daughter/Women’s Banquet will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in Festal Hall. All are welcome. A lasagna dinner will be catered by Marcello’s. Donated desserts are optional. Susan Kline will speak about her Civil War Quilt. Other quilts will also be on display. Sign up slips will be available in the narthex kiosk or by calling the church office at 717.249.3310.
